Map sources and licences

Boundary sources: the Office for National Statistics, Ordnance Survey and Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland county boundaries. Source data is licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

England uses ceremonial counties constructed from December 2025 authority boundaries, with a May 2026 OS boundary for the Stockton-on-Tees split. Greater London includes the 32 boroughs and the City of London. Scotland uses council areas; Wales uses principal areas. Northern Ireland uses six county identities, not current council districts.

The pinned OSNI county map omits some offshore islands, and its operative boundary date is not published. Mapped areas reflect this known limitation. Northern Ireland neighbour questions are excluded. The unresolved Bristol–Monmouthshire contact is excluded from both correct and incorrect neighbour options.

Geometry includes the source boundary extent and inland water; areas are approximate, not dry-land-only measurements. Distances and directions run between the centres of the mapped areas, not along roads. Town and city names are for reference, not plotted centre points. Shared borders on land or through rivers and lakes count as neighbours; a bridge or ferry alone does not.

After completing a puzzle, Reference gives each place’s definition, names, source period and mapped area. Alternative names retain their language and provenance; equivalent spellings are accepted as answers. Historical Reference entries describe their own periods and are not Daily targets.

Who we are

Britele (britele.uk) is operated by OPL ADVISORY LTD (“we”, “us” or “our”), a private limited company registered in England and Wales under company number 16704749.

Our registered office is 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, United Kingdom, WC2H 9JQ. We are the data controller responsible for personal information collected through Britele and are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) under registration number ZC055690.

Information we process

When you play

Your game progress, settings, whether you have dismissed the map-clue update note, whether you have already rated today’s map clue, and cached app files are stored locally in your browser or installed app. We do not receive your guesses, answers or game history. Britele uses no accounts, advertising or analytics cookies.

When the site is delivered

Our hosting provider processes standard technical information needed to deliver and protect the site, such as your IP address, requested page, browser or device information, and the date and time of the request. We do not use this information to identify individual players or build advertising profiles.

When you contact us

We use your name, email address, message and any information or attachments you choose to provide to handle your enquiry and improve Britele.

Optional website analytics

We use Plausible Analytics to understand use of Britele and improve the game. It reports aggregate visits, recognised referral and campaign sources, device/browser categories and approximate location, plus counts of rounds started, finished or won, bonus participation/completion, sharing attempts and optional helpful/not-yet ratings of the new map clues.

We do not send guesses, answers, typed text, puzzle identifiers or saved game history. We remove arbitrary URL parameters and fragments, and only send approved campaign tags and recognised referral sources. A map-clue rating sends only one of two fixed event names when analytics is on. No free-text feedback or survey replies are sent to Plausible.

Plausible processes the IP address and browser information sent with a request to calculate daily visitor counts. It does not store raw IP addresses or use cookies or persistent player identifiers. Its daily counting cannot tell us whether you returned on another day. Visitor analytics are processed and stored in the EU. See Plausible's data policy.

Analytics is on by default on britele.uk for aggregate statistics to improve the service. Choose OK on the introductory notice to dismiss it while keeping analytics on. You can turn analytics off here or in the game footer, free of charge. The introductory notice also offers an off option with a confirmation. We also respect Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control browser signals. Changing this choice does not affect play or saving.

JavaScript is needed to send analytics or change its setting.

We remember only an on/off preference in this browser's local storage, with no player identifier. It remains until you change it or clear the site's storage. When analytics is off, offline or unavailable, missed activity is not sent later. Visits using older app versions or blocked analytics may be absent from the totals.

Why we use information

We process information where necessary for our legitimate interests in operating a secure and reliable website, responding to enquiries, maintaining records and improving Britele. For optional aggregate analytics, we rely on our legitimate interest in understanding use and improving the game, with clear information and a free, simple way to object under the statistical-purpose exception to the UK storage/access rules. We do not use these statistics for advertising, profiling or decisions about individual players. Where appropriate, we may also process information to take steps you request, comply with a legal obligation, or establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

Who receives information

We use service providers acting on our behalf, including Netlify for website hosting, IONOS for email and Plausible for optional aggregate analytics. We may also disclose information to professional advisers, regulators or public authorities where necessary or required by law. We do not sell personal information.

If a provider processes information outside the United Kingdom, we require an appropriate legal safeguard, such as an adequacy regulation or approved contractual protections, where applicable.

How long we keep information

Our Plausible Business plan retains analytics for up to five years. We review whether we still need these statistics as the service develops.

We retain routine enquiry correspondence for up to 12 months after the enquiry is resolved, deleting it sooner where it is no longer needed.

Where correspondence forms part of a transaction, complaint or legal matter, we retain the relevant information for the period necessary to meet applicable legal or accounting obligations, resolve the matter, or establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

Technical hosting records are retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for security, troubleshooting and service operation, subject to our providers’ documented retention schedules. Locally stored game data remains on your device until the browser removes it or you clear the site’s storage. Removing an app icon does not necessarily erase browser storage.

Your rights

Depending on the circumstances, you may have rights to access, correct or erase your personal information; restrict or object to its use; and receive a portable copy. These rights are not absolute. To exercise a right, email hello@britele.uk.

Children

Britele does not ask players to create an account or provide personal information. If you are under 13 and want to contact us, please ask a parent or guardian to do so for you.

Changes to this notice

We will update this page before introducing any materially different use of personal information, including any changes to analytics. The date above shows when this notice was last revised.
